Celebrating Jo Ann Bachman; Thankful for the Gifts She Has Brought to All of Us

Friends,

Today, I have the privilege of writing a special letter, one of celebration and, more importantly, one of thanksgiving.  Yes, I’m sure that you think I am being uncreative, taking advantage of the timing of next week’s classic American holiday.  I assure you, however, that this is a different letter than you expect.

At certain times, it is particularly appropriate to give thanks not just for the things that we have in our lives, but for the people.  From our most beloved family members to strangers offering uplifting smiles as they pass by, it is in others that we find the greatest cause for gratefulness.  And sometimes, it is the people with whom you work that deserve the most sincere recognition.  In this letter, I want to recognize Jo Ann Bachman.

At the end of this month, Jo Ann will begin enjoying a well-earned retirement, but that isn’t quite the right word for her new journey.  To explain why, I owe you all an explanation of what Jo Ann has given to her dear friend, the late Ray Anderson.

For over 15 years, Jo Ann made Ray’s life…well…manageable!  While tens of thousands of people saw Ray speak all around the world, few of them realized that he was really there because of the commitment of his team, the people of Interface.  Jo Ann was the quarterback of that team, coordinating his schedule, gracefully facilitating his many relationships in the world of business and sustainability, and offering him the absolute dedication of a true friend.  As a devoted Cornhusker fan, Jo Ann will most certainly appreciate that analogy!

As you know, Ray passed away in August 2011, but his passing did not mark the end of Jo Ann’s loyalty to Ray and his vision for a sustainable world for Tomorrow’s Child.  In January 2012, she joined the Ray C. Anderson Foundation, helping Ray’s family to craft the future of his legacy.  For nearly three years, Jo Ann’s efforts have enabled this Foundation to find its way.  She has been the bridge between Ray the executive and Ray the inspirational namesake of this Foundation.  I know one thing with certainty – she has made Ray proud.

Retirement?  No – this is Jo Ann’s reward.  When a person so selflessly dedicates herself to a friend, and to a higher purpose such as environmental sustainability, she has earned recognition.  Jo Ann, I hope your retirement is your victory lap!

On behalf of Mary Anne, Harriet, and all of Ray’s family, thank you Jo Ann!  Thank you for your passion and vision and belief.  Thank you for joining us in this amazing journey.  Thank you in particular for your friendship with us.  Best of wishes Jo Ann, you’ve been a gift to us!
